Summer has come roaring to the mountains of the Pacific Northwest. Yesterday it was 100° F! We don’t have AC or even a fan, so we just stay hot 🙂 I was still able to do a little work on the baby D quilt. I marked all my squares and then started sewing them together to make the half square triangles. I was dripping with sweat the whole time and couldn’t bring myself to turn on the iron to press them open.
I also realized my sewing machine petal gets very hot when I’m sewing. I’ve never sewn barefoot before and it burned me! Yah, I’m guessing that’s not good. I am on a waiting list to have someone look at my machine. I am torn between wanting a new one or wanting this one to be repaired. It’s about 40 years old so it doesn’t have any of the bells and whistles of a new machine, but that is also why I really like it. Guess we’ll see.
Lastly, I have been on a mission to learn how to sew a zipper on something. I have read probably 20 tutorials on it, but can’t quite wrap my head around it. So, I bought a bunch of zippers and I’m just going to keep sewing them until I figure it out 🙂 Ideally, I’d like to know how to put an invisible zipper on a pillow cover, and make a little zippered pouch for holding my binding supplies.
Any recommendations on a fail-proof tutorial?

Sewing in the heat is not much fun at all. Your HSTs are looking very neat. Maybe you pedal only heated up due to lots of stop start sewing stints on you HSTs as well as the hot weather??? I know my pedal become very warm while stippling for any length of time.

Thanks Karen! Glad to know that your petal gets warm too after quilting for a long time. I’ll keep my eye on it… I really don’t want to part with it to have it fixed.

Lovely little stack of HST’s there!
As for zipper tutorials… i like this one for zip pouches and such – http://www.makeit-loveit.com/2011/10/sewing-tips-installing-a-basic-zipper.html
It has lots of pictures and is really well written.
But this one is also great for zippers for pillows – http://www.sewmamasew.com/2011/02/add-a-zipper-to-your-pillow/
Once you try it you’ll realize it really isn’t that hard!

Thanks for links to the tutorials! They both have a lot more detail and pictures than ones I looked at. Getting excited 🙂
