I was so honored to be asked to create a block for the 2017 Quilter’s Planner. My block, Doves in the Daylight, is an adaptation of a classic block called Dove in the Window. I love the simplicity of the block and the visual impact it makes with simple shapes. I thought it was the perfect block to turn into a mini, so I made one to share with you. If you are following along with the Quilter’s Planner Quilt-along this year, I’ll include the full tutorial below. Please feel free to ask if you have any questions on the pattern. Hope you enjoy!
Doves in the Daylight block (Dove in the Window adaptation)
by: Michelle Bartholomew for the 2017 Quilter’s Planner

Color A – one fat eighth
Color B (background) – one fat quarter

(5) 1.5″ squares
Color B (white):
(16) 2.5″ squares
(4) 1.5″ x 6″ strips
(8) 1.5″ x 5″ strips
SEW:
Step 1: Use the 2.5″ squares for Color A & Color B to make 32 HSTs using the instructions below.
Half Square Triangles (HSTs) Two-at-a-Time method
a. Place two squares (one of Color A, one of Color B) right sides together.
b. Draw a diagonal line from one corner to another on the lighter colored square.
c. Sew 1/4″ from that line on each side.
d. Cut along the line you drew to split the square in half.
e. Open and press to make two HSTs.
f. Trim to 2″ square.
Step 2: Make Dove Blocks :
Using 8 HSTs and (1) 2″ square of Color A, sew three rows of three to assemble the dove block as shown.
Repeat until you have 4 dove blocks.
Step 3: Make the Top/bottom Borders:
Sew (2) 1.5″ x 6″ strips of Color B on either side of (1) 1.5″ square of Color A. Press.
Make 2.
Step 4: Make Center Strip:
Alternate sewing (3) 1.5″ squares of Color A and (2) 1.5″ x 5″ strips of color B together as shown. Press.
Step 5: Add strips between doves:
Align two dove blocks so that their bottom points face the center. Alternate sewing (3) 1.5″ x 5″ strips of Color B and the two dove blocks as shown. Press away from doves.
Repeat with the remaining dove blocks and strips.
ASSEMBLE:
Line up each row according to the diagram below.
Sew each row together. Press seams.

Thank you so much for this easy to follow tutorial. I used my Accuquilt to cut the half square triangles making it easier for me to piece 😊
